Chinese Artificial Intelligence (AI) Firm DeepSeek Reports $15B Funding Round

Chinese artificial intelligence company DeepSeek has completed a major capital raise totaling roughly 100 billion yuan, equivalent to about $15 billion, according to a Bloomberg report citing people familiar with the matter.

The Hangzhou-based startup increased its fundraising goal more than once during investor discussions, starting from an initial target of 50 billion yuan, moving to 80 billion yuan, and ultimately reaching the higher final figure.

This places the round among the largest capital infusions for a Chinese startup and underscores the firm’s drive to compete more directly with leading U.S. artificial intelligence laboratories such as Anthropic and OpenAI.

Battery manufacturer Contemporary Amperex Technology and internet giant Tencent Holdings, the operator of the WeChat platform, ranked among the largest participants in the financing.

The details of the round have not been made public, and the individuals who described the transaction requested anonymity because the information remains confidential.

Bloomberg first reported the development.

DeepSeek first drew widespread attention in 2025 when its models demonstrated performance levels comparable to those from major U.S. developers while requiring substantially lower training and operational costs.

That achievement contributed to significant volatility in global technology markets at the time.

Until the latest raise, however, the company lacked the scale of financial resources available to the largest American frontier labs, each of which has secured well over $100 billion across various funding structures.

The new capital begins to narrow that disparity, although a considerable gap in total resources remains.

The funds are expected to support expanded investment in computing infrastructure and continued development of open-weight models intended for use both inside China and in international markets.

Related reporting has indicated plans for a large data-center project in Inner Mongolia that would deploy a substantial number of Huawei-designed AI accelerators, reflecting a broader Chinese effort to build domestic hardware and software capabilities less dependent on U.S. suppliers.

DeepSeek has also released successive high-efficiency models, including versions of its V4 series, that have pressured competitors both domestically and abroad on price-performance grounds.

The successful close of the round, which doubled the original target, points to strong demand from corporate and state-linked investors as Beijing intensifies its focus on artificial intelligence self-reliance and global competitiveness.

Many of the participating investors are connected to China’s industrial and technology policy priorities.

The financing also moves DeepSeek closer to a potential public listing, with earlier accounts describing preparations for an initial public offering, possibly on a mainland exchange such as Shanghai’s STAR Market, in the 2027 timeframe.

Such a debut would represent a notable event for Chinese equity markets.

DeepSeek, Contemporary Amperex Technology, and Tencent have not publicly confirmed the details of the transaction.

The raise illustrates how rapidly capital is flowing into China’s leading artificial intelligence developers as the country seeks to close the gap with the United States in frontier model capabilities, data-center capacity, and overall ecosystem strength. While US labs continue to hold significant advantages in absolute funding and access to the most advanced chips, the scale of DeepSeek’s latest round signals that the competitive balance is evolving.
